Lebanon - EuroMed Days to look at obstacles to tackling terror

What are the obstacles to tackling terror? What role can civil society play in relations between Lebanon and Europe?

These, and many other issues, will be topics for discussion at the "EuroMed Days," announced on Friday by the European Union Commission.

Slated for November 21, 28 and 29, the EuroMed Days are part of the EU's "neighborhood policy," which aims at stronger better cooperation with states wishing to introduce reforms.

The Sagesse University and the Center for Conflict Analysis and Settlement are also helping to organize the event, which will mark the 10th anniversary of the EuroMed Partnership.

"On November 28 and 29, EuroMed Days will include open dialogues with the public, particularly for assessment of the political and economic aspects of the EuroMed Partnership, the obstacles related to terrorism and civil society's role between Lebanon and Europe," read a statement released by the EU.

EU Ambassador Patrick Renauld said since the beginning of the year, the commission has worked with Lebanese civil society to engender an understanding of the EuroMed neighborhood policy. He said it also encourages dialogue between civil society and political officials.

British Ambassador to Lebanon James Watt described the neighborhood policy as a "golden opportunity for states to economically and socially benefit, particularly in times of security and stability."

Also on the agenda: seminars by officials operating projects in Lebanon with European Union funding; the role of women in rural development; local development and planning; the media and partnership, and the industry of movies. The event will be broadcast by the NBN television station starting 8:30 p.m.
