MedMeeting in Florence

The 1st Mediterranean Social and Political Research (MSPR) Meeting took place in March 2000. The EUI in Florence welcomed over 150 scholars—young academics and renowned experts—from Europe and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) who worked together for three days on a range of topics each supervised by a minimum of two Workshop Directors.

This 2000 Meeting was the first of what has now become a major gathering for social scientists working in the area. Since its creation in 1976, the EUI has developed a tradition of intellectual debate within a multicultural and international environment, and provides the perfect setting for the Annual Mediterranean Meeting. These meetings are a unique occasion for young academics to submit their research to experts, and to develop research networks which promote cooperation in research and policy in the field.

The Mediterranean Programme

The Mediterranean Programme was established at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies (RSCAS) of the European University Institute (EUI) in 1999. The Programme focuses on the Euro-Mediterranean area, thus embracing Southern Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, including the countries involved in the Barcelona Process, the Arabian Peninsula, Iran and Iraq. It has three main fields of research: Socio-political studies, Political economy and Migration studies.

The sixth edition of the meeting will be inaugurated by a lecture by Dr. Nader Fergany on Alternative Futures of Arab Countries: An Arab Human Development Perspective, on wednesday 16th. A Luncheon keynote speech by Dr. Miguel-Angel Navarro on the 18th will discuss “The Tenth Anniversary of the Barcelona Process: Spanish Views on the Challenges and Opportunities”.
