Chris Patten warmly welcomes the ratification of the EU-Lebanon Association Agreement by the Lebanese Parliament

“I am delighted at yesterday’s ratification of the EU-Lebanon association agreement by the Lebanese Parliament. This agreement opens up considerable opportunities for Lebanese and European governments, business and societies to develop closer and mutually beneficial relations and it constitutes a milestone in our partnership”, Commissioner Patten said and encouraged EU Member States to proceed speedily to ratification of the agreement on their side.

Commissioner Patten at the same time expressed his hope that “negotiations with Syria can be accelerated so that our important objective of concluding associations agreements with all our Euro-Med partners could be soon accomplished.”

The Association Agreement between the EU and Lebanon opens a new chapter in bilateral relations and consolidates the Euro-Mediterranean partnership launched by the 1995 Barcelona conference. It will contribute to peace and security in the region and will stimulate trade and economic relations between Lebanon and its Mediterranean partners.

In the framework of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership the EU and its 15 member states establish Association Agreements with the 12 Mediterranean partner countries. With 10 of these countries the EU has already concluded Association Agreements. With Syria negotiations are still going on and Lybia for the time being has an observer status.
