|Internet network links Jordan's state universities|
|AMMAN : Jordan has introduced a broadband Internet network to link eight state universities in an initiative unveiled on the sidelines of a two-day IT forum that got under way Tuesday.|
The $2.1 million project is being implemented with the assistance of Cisco Systems Inc, the world's largest manufacturer of networking equipment, and in its initial phase, will allow students to interact with 3,000 European universities, Information and Technology Minister Fawaz Zohbi said.
Jordan hopes to connect all 1.5 million pupils in its 3,200 state schools to the network by 2006, Zohbi said.
The two-day IT forum on the shores of the Dead Sea is part of a five-year strategy started in 1999 and aimed at putting the kingdom on the hi-tech map.
