FIGHTING DESERTIFICATION IN MOROCCO AND TUNISIA
Action programmes for fighting desertification in Morocco and Tunisia will soon be monitored and assessed under a new project recently launched within the MEDA funded Euro-Mediterranean Regional Programme on the Environment.
With around € 1.6 million from the European Commission the project aims at making sure that data are properly collected and analysed, that sensitive areas are continuously monitored, and that exchange of relevant information and experience between countries is taking place. The 3 year project is co-ordinated by the Sahara and Sahel Monitoring Centre (OSS), and implemented by the Moroccan and Tunisian Ministries for Water, for Forestry, and for the Environment in partnership with the Arab Maghreb Union (UMA), and the Arid Regions Institute.
A regional Human Rights Conference was held from 28 to 30 June in Casablanca under the worldwide European Initiative for Democracy and Human Rights (EIDHR), the main EU programme in this area, as part of a series of 8 meetings around the world.
The Conference was opened by Morocco's Minister for Human Rights Mohamed Aujjar. It was devoted to the Maghreb region, and brought together representatives from Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and the EU. European Commission activities on Democracy and Human Rights were discussed, as well as the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership and the MEDA Programme. A presentation of EIDHR was made, and the legal framework for NGOs' activities was also addressed. The EIDHR budget for 2002 is € 100 million.
