CeBIT Bilisim Eurasia 2003 Opens in Istanbul

(ISTANBUL)-CeBIT Bilisim Eurasia held between 2nd - 7th of September in Istanbul, with an opening ceremony that included speeches from the Turkish Prime Minister and organizers.

This is the main ICT show in the country, and is co-organized by InterPro, a Turkish company, and Deutsche Messe of Hannover, the international exhibition organizers of CeBIT.

This is the fourth year since its been co-organized and the show has witnessed a leap in the quality of exhibition services, the number of total exhibitors which is over 800 companies, the number of countries participating which is 21, and the total number and quality of visitors which is expected to exceed 160,000 in CeBIT Bilisim Eurasia 2003.

The opportunities offered by this event span the whole region, as Turkey is in a central position between Europe and Asia. Therefore, it is ideal to utilize CeBIT Bilisim as a platform into these neighboring markets.

Also, the event provides a basis for further development of the ICT sector in Turkey, as the country still works hard towards the aim of building the information society.

Speaking via satellite to the show's guests and officials at the opening ceremony, the Prime Minister of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, "This week, Istanbul hosts an important agenda of ICT issues."

"Unfortunately, in ICT, we are behind compared to EU countries. I read a report that said that Turkey was a fourth league country in ICT. We will change this fact, by implementing an e-transformation initiative," he added.

"The state, the society and the individual are all interlinked in the information society. A country's productivity is multiplied by ICT initiatives. We plan to train 18 million people, to ensure that every graduate and every civil servant is computer literate; and we will have techno-parks like Silicon Valley," said the Prime Minister.

"Beware, Turkey is coming," he concluded. Mr. Jorge Schomburg, the Managing Director of CeBIT Events Worldwide followed, welcoming all officials, participants and guests and saying that in spite of the "difficult, times the European ICT industry is going through", there is "light at the end of the tunnel".

Mr. Schomburg said, "The last two years have not been easy for the industry. After a decade of growth in which ICT sales doubled, we experienced a global economic slowdown following a record growth year of around 13 percent in 2000. In 2001, ICT growth dropped to a mere 2.8 percent and was even lower in 2002 at around 1 percent. Nevertheless, the use of ICT in the business community is increasing."

He said that the EuroStat studies show that 95 percent of European businesses use computers, while more than 80 percent are connected to the Internet. He went on to say that it is expected that there will be a strong market recovery in 2004, or possibly in the fall of this year."

CeBIT Bilisim Eurasia 2003 has seven halls, spanning 54,000 square meters of exhibition space. Hall 1 is dedicated to Communications & Network Technologies; Hall 2 is for e-Government, e-Municipality and Future Park; Hall 3 is the 'Made in Turkey' section, Halls 4 and 5 are dedicated to Information Technologies; Hall 6 is the IT Market area where consumers may buy products and Hall 7 is the Mobile Technologies section.

CeBIT Bilisim Eurasia 2003 runs from September 2 to 7, 2003. For more information, visit www.cebitbilisim.com.
