Italy to finance $100 million in Lebanon projects

The president of the Council for Development and Reconstruction (CDR), Nabil al-Jisr, and Italian Ambassador Gabriele Checchia, signed Monday two Development Cooperation Agreements for a total of 70 million euros ( $100 million). Social Minister Affairs Nayla Mouawad and interim Energy and Water Minister Mohammad Safadi were also present.

The first agreement, a 39-million-euro soft loan, will finance a five-year program for water supply and waste-water disposal in Jbeil. The project includes the rehabilitation and construction of reservoirs and distribution networks, the construction of pumping stations and wells, and rehabilitation and protection of transmission lines. It also includes the construction of a wastewater treatment plant and associated collection network with a capacity of 1,435 cubic meters per day.

The second agreement, a 30-million-euro grant, comes as part of the contribution to the reconstruction of Lebanon which Italy pledged at the Paris III donor's conference earlier this year.

Another 10 million will be directly allocated to the Lebanese government for three specific projects: the rehabilitation of Baabda Hospital, the construction of a water distribution system in Dinniyeh and a project on treatment of intellectual impairment in schools implemented by the Social Affairs Ministry. The contents of this last project (worth 2 million euros) will be spelled out in a separate Memorandum of Understanding that will be signed, in this same occasion, by Checchia and Mouawad.
