Italy to host Mediterranean, Gulf businesswomen symposium

Italian Minister of International Trade and European Affairs Emma Bonino said Monday her ministry would host a symposium for businesswomen in the Mediterranean basin and Arab Gulf countries.

A large Kuwaiti delegation, led by Sheikha Hessa Saad Al-Abdullah Al-Sabah, will participate in the event, due in Milan - the Italian financial and commercial hub - on March 5.

The event will be held under the title of "The Italian Forum of Woman Businesses from the Mediterranean, the Middle East and the Arab Gulf countries, " Bonino told a press conference here.

Bonino, who made a tour of the Arab Gulf region, including Kuwait, in 2006, said the initiative to hold the symposium was widely welcomed as it aimed to shed light on the growing prominent role of businesswomen in their societies, with a view to form a network of communication among the businesswomen.

Asserting the non-political nature of the event, she said it will be opened by Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi under the auspices of the Italian government, the Lombardia region and the Institute of Foreign Trade.

Bonino expressed hope that the initiative would be an annual event in other countries of the Mediterranean, the Middle East and the Arab Gulf to provide an opportunity for businesswomen to exchange experiences.

Representatives of 447 woman businesses will take part, including 170 Italian companies, 24 Algerian ones, 19 from Saudi Arabia, 22 from Kuwait, 17 from Bahrain, 12 from the UAE, 14 from Egypt, six from Jordan, 23 from Israel, nine from Lebanon, 11 from Libya, 44 from Morocco, four from Oman, nine from Qatar, nine from Syria, 14 from Tunisia, 24 from Turkey, 10 from Palestine, and six from Yemen, the minister pointed out.

As part of the event - the first of its kind - two symposiums and up to 1, 000 business meetings will be held.

Titled "Importance of Woman Businesses in Economic Growth," the first symposium will be attended by Prime Minister-designate Romano Prodi and Minister of Economy and Planning of the United Arab Emirates Sheikha Lubna Al-Qasimi.

The second symposium, titled "Business Globilization - Experience Confrontation between Sectors and Countries" will include two round-table meetings, with Sheikha Hessa attending the second one, Bonino added.

In a exclusive statement to KUNA, the Italian minister hailed the Kuwaiti participation in the event and expressed admiration to the energy and activity of Kuwaiti businesswomen and women representatives of the Kuwaiti civil society.

She also voiced hope for stronger economic and commercial ties between her country and Kuwait in line with the friendly bilateral political ties.
