Lebanon - Fneish promotes use of solar energy

Energy and Water Minister Mohammad Fneish distributed on Monday certificates for 40 persons who attended a week-long training session on the installation of solar energy systems, with the cooperation of the Chinese Embassy and under the supervision of Chinese experts.

Fneish said every year, Lebanon enjoys more than 300 sunny days which can be used to limit the production of energy generated by fuel.

He said his ministry is determined, along with the consultative team and the United Nations, to benefit as much as possible from solar or wind energy.

"The world's development in environment issues went past Lebanon," he said, adding that if Lebanon is capable of guiding its consumption and using an energy ever generating, this will create a clean environment."

Fneish stressed that cooperation with the private sector should be coupled with a publicity campaign so that the ministry and the sector benefit from the private companies' facilities to promote citizens' use of solar energy.

Fneish added that Lebanon does not only need guidance in the energy field but also in the field politics.

Anwar Ali, director of the project of the Lebanese Center for Energy Guidance, said the session encompassed various areas in South Lebanon.

"Thus, the project encouraged cooperation between the private and public sectors and promoted efficient participation for organized usage of solar energy, which spares the Lebanese government millions of U.S. dollars that can be invested in other socioeconomic sectors," he added.
