|Private investment prospects for the Middle East, North Africa: briefing at OECD|
|The countries of the Middle East and North Africa, in cooperation with the OECD, are seeking to bolster development of their economies by creating a more attractive environment for investment.
A ministerial meeting on this theme will take place in Jordan on 13-14 February 2006.
Egypt’s Minister of Investment, Dr. Mahmoud Mohieldin, and OECD Deputy Secretary-General Richard Hecklinger will hold a news briefing on the meeting and the issues to be discussed, at 11.00 a.m. on Thursday 2 February 2006 at OECD headquarters in Paris. Briefings will also be held at the OECD Centre, Schumannstr. 10, 10117 Berlin, on Friday 3 February, and at the Foreign Press Association, 11 Carlton House Terrace, London SWI Y 5AJ, at 2.30 p.m. on Monday 6 February.
At their meeting in Jordan, which will also be attended by ministers and senior investment officials from OECD countries, ministers from MENA countries in charge of investment policy will review recent policy reforms and set new targets for further action. They are invited to adopt a Declaration on common principles and good practice for attracting investment to MENA countries. The meeting will be open to the media and will end with a press conference.
A highlight will be a Business Forum on Monday 13 February in which the private sector will have an opportunity to express their views on key elements for a successful region-wide reform strategy. This will also be the occasion for the announcement of a number of “investor of the year” awards honouring successful investment projects in MENA countries. On Tuesday 14 February, Jordan’s King Abdullah II and OECD Secretary-General Donald J. Johnston will address the conference.
The meeting follows more than a year of discussion and analysis of specific issues in MENA countries, as part of the MENA-OECD Investment Programme. The Programme is part of a two-pronged initiative on “Governance and Investment for Development”, led by the governments of the MENA region and also including the “Good Governance for Development” initiative (see: www.oecd.org/mena/investment).
